Benfica - Back On The Map

This is going to be my only CM from now on, i plan to stick with this until FIFA 12 and try to make it a success, I will also be trying to become a bigger part of the community, commenting on thread, helping people out etc. And I vow to NOT get involved in any more silly arguments.

SL Benfica are a football club based in Lisbon, Portugal. It is known as one of the 'big three' clubs in Portugal, along with Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto - Benfica's biggest rivals. SL Benfica have more than 14 million supporters, which is a world record, Benfica's fans are known as 'Benfiquistas'
Benfica, Sporting and Porto were the three founding members of the Primeira, back in 1933. Benfica have never been relegated from this league.
'The Golden Era'
In the 1960's benfica were at their greatest, they broke Real Madrid's dominance winning the European Cup in 61 and 62. They would never win the trophy again, however they got to three more finals, but lost them all. This is commonly known as the best decade in the clubs history.
'The Dark Era'
Financial trouble began to undermine the club due to rampant spending and a questionable signing policy which allowed for squads composed of well over 30 players. Consequently, the period from 1994 through 2003 was arguably the darkest in the history of Benfica. During this time, Benfica only won one Portuguese Cup in 96 and finished in positions, such as sixth in 2000–01 and fourth in 2001–02. The debts were accumulating, and nearly every year saw the hire of a new Benfica coach and the addition of high-priced but under-performing players.
The club gradually rebuilt itself from 04 to now, Benfica have arguably completed their comeback, finishing second last year. Only time will tell if another 'Golden Era' is on the way.
